PC material opens up the residential market.
Many countries have begun the transition away from traditional lighting sources, thanks to a heightened consumer focus on energy savings and emissions reductions, as well as government regulations pushing to phase out inefficient light bulbs. However, to fully replace incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), LEDs must address cost, which remains one of the main barriers to entry into the mass residential market. As demand grows, consumers need to see and understand the benefits of investing in technology with a longer lifespan.
Durability and impact resistance are important criteria in a residential environment, as it is common for residents to install lights and drop them or mishandle replacement lights. The impact resistance provided by PC, measured in kJ/m2 (kilojoules per square meter) when breaking a sample in the laboratory against flexural impact, is significantly higher than that of glass and PMMA. In actual impact measurements, PC outperforms PMMA by 10 times and glass by 30 times.
