More Than 7,000 Containers Are Stranded

Sep 13, 2022

Up to 7,000 containers were stranded on the road between Karachi and Chaman on the Afghan border in southeastern Kandahar due to flooding.

Yet shipping lines have also not waived demurrage (D&D) for shippers and forwarders due to the floods, which have resulted in massive costs.

Many trucks ship empty boxes back to the carrier, but as the free rental period for boxes ends, demurrage charges (D&D) kick in, and a lot of cash pours into the carrier's wallet.

It is estimated that Yang Ming, OOCL, HMM, and other smaller shipping lines have collected up to $14 million in demurrage (D&D) charges since the floods hit mid-last month.

Traders said they were charged between $130 and $170 a day per container for holding unreturnable containers.
